MAGGIE ROGERS
FIRST MAID OF THE WHITE HOUSE
1909 - 1939
Maggie Rogers First Maid of The White House
A major reason why the collection of Raleigh DeGeer Amyx is so Complete, is because of the input of two extraordinary women - Maggie Rogers (1874-1953) and Her Daughter, Lillian Rogers Parks (1897-1997). Both women served at The White House and became intimately acquainted, over a combined White House career of 60 years, with numerous Presidents and First Ladies. Maggie Rogers first appeared as a Maid of The White House in 1909; Serving First Lady Nellie Taft and President William Howard Taft. Shortly after arriving there, Maggie Rogers was given the title of First Maid of The White House and this was the title she held until she retired in 1939.

However, Eleanor Roosevelt Called upon Maggie Rogers to return once again to The White House and take personal care of FDR's Secretary, Missy LeHand, (1898-1944) after she suffered a stroke. Before 1929, Daughter Lillian Rogers Parks (Pictured at left in 1983 with Raleigh DeGeer Amyx) was often meeting her Mother at The White House and once was even caught sitting, as a little girl, in the oversized bath-tub of William Howard Taft. The President walked into his bathroom but did not seem to mind and just broadly smiled.

Shown at the very top, in an 11"x14" sepia photograph, is Maggie Rogers. She is Wearing a Beautiful plume and satin dress. Both have plume and velvet buttons. The custom made outfit is topped off by a black velvet hat and a willow plume. Maggie Rogers was so proud of this outfit that she headed to a professional photographer
in Washington D.C., the first chance she got, and had herself photographed in the finest wearing apparel of any White House Maid before or since.
My Thirty Years Backstairs at The White House

Raleigh DeGeer Amyx became a close friend of the Rogers/Parks Family and was often helped in his quest of American History by this close family connection. There was not one week that went by, for a period of 20 years, that Mr. Amyx did not see or speak to Lillian Rogers Parks. On February 1, 1997, on occasion of the 100 Birthday of Mrs. Parks, she presented this lovely sepia toned photograph of her Mother, Maggie Rogers. This imposing photograph always hung over her bed and Mrs. Parks gifted it to her trusted friend, Raleigh DeGeer Amyx of Virginia. When Lillian Rogers Parks passed away, later in 1997, Amyx served as a Pall Bearer at her funeral - per her request.
