OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE CHINA

PRESIDENT ANDREW JACKSON SET HIS SITES ON SOME STUNNING CUSTOM WHITE HOUSE CUT CRYSTAL, AS DESIGNED BY SKILLED ARTISTS WITH THE BAKEWELL & PAGE GLASS COMPANY IN PITTSBURGH.

Andrew Jackson did not order Official White House China as some have claimed. But The President's custom cut glass orders included all types of cut crystal, such as wine glasses, celery vases, water glasses and water bottles, etc. Traditionally, on the Seal, the Eagle grasps the olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left. However, the 1829 artist's depicition of the Emblem was a departure from this tradition, in that, instead of the olive branch, there is a palm frond near the Eagle's right talon. A laurel branch on the Eagle's left replaces the arrows. Both the palm and the laurel were then considered symbols of victory.

ANDREW JACKSON SERVED AS OUR 7TH PRESIDENT FROM 1829 TO 1837

Each piece of the Jackson custom cut lead crystal was engraved with grapevines and grapes, as well as a coat of arms, based on the Great Seal of the United States. On the insignia is a banner with the motto "E Pluribus Unum." (out of many, one) The custom orders included all types of cut crystal, such as wine glasses, celery vases, water glasses and water bottles, etc. Additionally, the President made custom cut glass orders 3 times during his two terms, 1829, 1833 and 1837.

THE ANDREW JACKSON 12 7/8" FULL LENGTH HAND-CUT WINE DECANTER

Andrew Jackson's impressive hand-cut crystal was the first newly designed pattern since that of James Monroe. President Jackson knew that and seemed determined to go all out in leaving a impressive set of cut crystal behind. Nearly 200 years later, what little remains at the White House has stood the test of time. The Jackson cut crystal remains among the most stunning ever ordered.

This Jackson cut crystal decanter had a rather historic journey along its path to the Raleigh DeGeer Amyx Collection.

This impressive cut Jackson crystal wine decanter, from The Raleigh DeGeer Amyx Collection, stayed within the confines of the White House until gifted to Major Archibald Butt by President Roosevelt, a close friend and confidant as well as Military Aide to both Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. During the term of President Roosevelt, this historic Andrew Jackson decanter went to Archibald Butt. Tragically, Mr. Butt perished as a passenger of the ill fated Titantic in 1912. He, along with 1,517 others, was enveloped into the bottom of the dark frigid sea. President Taft thoughtfully delivered The eulogy of Archibald Butt.

Prior to the sinking of the Titantic, Archibald Butt had, according to a still retained hand-written note from T.R.'s 4th child, Ethel Carow Roosevelt Derby, gifted this decanter (left) to her. Upon the death of Ethel Carow Roosevelt the decanter then went to her daughter Edith Roosevelt Derby ( Williams) and remained in that estate until her death at Vashon Island, Washington, in 2008, at which time the estate was settled.

The complete chain of historic ownership is today known only because of the caring vigilance of John Alexander Pearce. Mr. Pearce was the sole reason that this stunning cut crystal decanter, of such historic merit, is now an important feature of the Raleigh DeGeer Amyx Collection. As such the White House, the Hermitage, as well as all other Institutions of merit now know its current location.
